Description:

This site presents the correspondence of the Irish painter James Barry (1741-1806). Tim McLoughlin edited the letter texts and supplied all the annotations and contextual prose. The site offers the user a scholarly edition of some two hundred letters to and from James Barry, including those between him and the Royal Academy and the Society of Arts, the two institutions closest to his artistic work. Original manuscripts have been used where available and images are provided from time to time of art work that is mentioned or alluded to in the letters. The edition also contains appendices which contain materials that enlarge on issues raised in the letters. Together with the annotations and the critical introduction, these materials help the user to a better understanding of Barry in the cultural context of his times in the late eighteenth century.

"The Correspondence of James Barry" is the result of a two year research project at the Moore Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
